Absolutely spot on. It's exactly what I have been saying Al along... it's not what you spend it's how wisely you make the most of the resources at your disposal.

This requires a keen eye for detail and a fully fleshed out strategy but will never happen with these laissez-faire bellends in charge - not on the football side of things anyway.

The land wasn't sold for double the original £38m. Lot of conflicting reports, most saying Galliard sold it on to Barratt Homes for £40m, although as it was a joint venture between the two developers there might have been an option agreement to purchase in place anyway.

In any case it would have cost the developers another £100m+ to demolish the ground, and then develop and build the flats, so they probably doubled their money at best, not made 10x what they paid for the ground as some people seem to think.

Quite why anyone thinks that there was something untoward there I don't know. Doesn't look like good business by GSB, but that just seems par for the course with them.

how much was the land flogged on for after sully sold it for £35m odd, double that wasn't it? how much are all the flats worth on it now, few hundred mil i should think? of which sullivan only sees any of the original £35m, which was "invested" in a new club shop and some wooden shirts up around the cess pit.

The graph within that article is at best disingenuous because it concentrates only on transfer fees, which are rarely if ever paid upfront and in most cases have been offset against other income.

For example there is no way they've paid out £22m in one go for Bowen in January, more likely a fraction of that and the upcoming payments will be covered by the likely sale of Rice in the summer, or maybe Anderson, Lanzini etc.

There is a clear pattern throughout the last ten years - patting themselves on the back for making 'marquee' signings whilst always playing catch up in terms of finance and team cohesion from the last time they did so, and the time before that.

It also doesn't take into account wages - we may have spent big on Haller for example, but the saving in wages from Carroll, Hernandez, and Lucas (probably over £15m a season) has to be taken into account.

The biggest issue however isn't how much money they are spending - it is how they are spending it. To be sustainable a club simply has to have a strategy and as much as we don't like to think about selling players if they do well the potential for sell-on value has to come into it. Any idiot can spend money to show off and feel good about themselves, but the impressive thing is spending it well.

It's not dissimilar to the Icelandics wanting to look serious by spending big money, then realising that no players worth that much wanted to come to us so they compromise on Kieron Dyer. Then Newcastle up the price and we still agree like mugs, not because we want Dyer particularly but because we want to sign anyone so as we can tell everyone how much we spent.

I could go to a car dealership and insist on paying 50k for a Vauxhall Corsa, especially on the never-never. But it doesn't mean the car is worth that much, in fact it means I'm a prick who doesn't know the value of anything.

Look at the record signings whilst they have owned the club - five of them, which I'm sure they and their tame journalists would see as something to be proud of:

Haller £45m - time will tell, but most fans surely agree we would be lucky to recoup our money, never mind a profit

Anderson £36m - ditto

Ayew £20.5m (reportedly broke even with this one, although fuck knows how)

Carroll £15m (released on a free)

Jarvis £10.75m (sold for £2.5m)

It depends on what figures you use whether you include Arnautovic in there as costing slightly more than Ayew, but even his time at the club more or less only broke even.

In amongst the more recent records can be found Diop (credit where it's due, recent form aside) and Fornals (who looks as if he may be justifying his fee if he continues his own form) but also Yarmolenko, who has no sell on value whatsoever, and a massive publicity around Wilshere coming in on some of our highest wages ever and who will almost certainly end up leaving on a free or for a nominal fee.

Plus a rough £10m profit on Payet which may look good on paper but meant letting one of the best players we have had for the past 20 years go because they couldn't build a team to match his ambitions (off-field rumours notwithstanding) and spunking 2/3 of that money on Fonte (£3m loss just over a year later) and Snodgrass, who to be fair has come good as a squad player and a trier but was supposed to be the answer to discontent over Payet leaving along with Fonte and that remains a joke.

Price of everything, value of nothing these frauds. Pure and simple.

The real money won't be UP profit, it'll be selling the Club as a whole.

Whatever it cost them in the first place is going down the whole time with the interest income and the UP profit. It'll be interesting to know their actual outlay once this is all over (before the sale).

So they pay £85m+ to buy shares in the club, and take on the debt, just so they can sell the ground, for less than £40m? Don't be stupid.

Sullivan's been saying for years that the club's valuation could be £500m-700m within a few years of moving to the OS. And you think the peanuts from the Boleyn sale is the only reason they bought the club?

He did sell the Boleyn for a profit. Was all he saw in buying the club. Too impatient though. Should have waited for a few years before developing the site.

Btw, the net spend is a tough one to pin down and depends on the length of time. Some have us as 9th.

I always thought they should and would spend more but all that did was back fire as it just resulted in agents directing Sullivan to the lowest value in the market :-(

Sullivan should ditch his agents, get in an experienced proven DoF but that would mean admitting he is clueless so wont happen.

Completely normal to do so. As with any sporting club, they want to talk up the club after victories and bury defeats. And if the team keeps winning we're more likely to agree with them.

It's NOT PR by Sullivan though. Article is more likely PR by Sky to placate (to a degree) Sullivan while having some semblance of critical discourse.

Behind the scenes, maybe GSB still simmering about legal action against Sky over "hands in the till"... They had one verbal apology over, in particular, Birmingham tenure. This probably the latest written (aural?) cuddle to guarantee it all goes away. Sullivan can point to it all as "exoneration".

It's acceptable to say: They spend but they're a bit shit.
Not to say: They're thieves.
